Not just a pretty girl

Women's studies classes should be made compulsory to every student all over the world..esp..In India.

Till I came here, I just about knew that a feminist is someone who fights for or believes in women's equal rights..didn't know why, when , how nothing. I took this class only  cause the other class I wanted ( drawing ) was full and this was at a good timing.

It's just been 5 weeks and i absolutely love it..it really gets you thinking. We learn about the different kinds of feminism and how each movement started which sounds really boring but you realise, it's  just not a thing of the past. Most women today are still being dominated, oppressed and abused emotionally or physically. It might not be on as large a scale as it was but it definitely still exists. Women are still viewed as sex objects who look pretty for the man's pleasure and now it's being portrayed that way everywhere that it doesn't affect us or even make us pause and think. Media has pretty much just gotten us used to the concept. Prostitution , porn and strip clubs make matters worse.

I've suddenly started appreciating and looking at  shows like Powerpuff Girls, Sex & the City, women like Oprah, Ellen and  Marget Cho differently.

Lots of extremely intelligent, pretty and fun women I know really changed(most for the worse) and are shattered after a relationship but the male counterpart finds his next target in a matter of weeks and is content with his life. It sucks.

In future,as cliche as this might sound, I wish to contribute more towards the liberalisation of women and  help them realise they are worth so MUCH more.

I can almost feel ashwitha looking at me proudly.

Hey! :D

so true. and the saddest thing is, we usually don't even realise how "oppressed" we are until taking a class like this. We so willingly believe in all the rubbish that we've been fed about how a "good" woman should behave, when actually, there's no reason for us to believe in that nonsense at all.

go mumu! :D

This post gave me the *HeebieJeebies* for two reasons:
1. I was talking to arch a couple of weeks back about how I can see you turn into this power horse of a feminist and that the blog is tending that way, and you post this!

2. Just yesterday, I thought it was sex in the city as well, With nothing else to watch on TV, it was going on, and I noticed that it's been sex AND the city all this while

Still though, In the light of how you used to bitch about this class when it started, You have come a long way!

*pride* over takes.
You actually have a feminist perspective and that is great.

two things I dont agree with,
It is not being done on a large scale? I doubt it.

And oprah a personality - yes. but not someone that is worth admiring.
but great perspective.

i agree, i'm taking a gender course and it's damn interesting. it's not just about women screaming for equality or fighting for rights; it's daily things that are issues while for men, they are not.

the best part is that there are 9 guys in my class with about 20 girls. previous years had only 2 or 3 guys, our teacher got damn excited because she says you can track the change this way.

@ash: In a way we do tend to believe it also casue it's just been passed down generation after generation...we follow it blindly. Things are changing now thou..which is good.

@sangi: I Know there are loads and loads of communities for women..to help them, but i was more refering to people like you and me also, who probably go through it on a daily basis not realsing it.
and oprah, I dont really watch every show..but i loved watching how she contributed and influenced obama's victory and after everything she's been though as a child..and how hard life was for a non-white high-class women back then..she's now the worlds most influencial women. It's a personality worth admiring.

this reminds me of an article i read recently. it was written by a feminist about what would happen to the world if men started menstruating and how it would become the next cool thing and how they would brag about who bleeds more and whose lasts longer. she accused women of giving men that power over them. its the same logic- promiscuous guys are studs and the women are sluts. its horrible. they make the rules and we as women seem to follow them. unfortunate.

female empowerment is what is required before people try changing the opposite sex.
